Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the invisible editor.

How is this different from built-in dictation?

Standard dictation is a stenographer. It writes exactly what you say including stumbles, fillers and run-on sentences. Rubil is an editor. It takes your raw stream of consciousness, removes the ums and uhs, structures it into paragraphs or bullets and formats it for the specific context (like a professional email vs a Slack DM).

Does it work in every website?

Yes. Rubil is a universal Chrome extension. It works in Gmail, Slack (web), Jira, Notion, Linear, Google Docs, LinkedIn and any other site with a text input field. We don't require you to type in a separate app and copy-paste.

Do you train AI models on my voice data?

No. We operate on a Radical Privacy model. Your audio is processed transiently through our trusted service providers (OpenAI) and immediately discarded after formatting. We do not store your recordings on our servers and we do not use your data to train models. Your personal dictionary (names, terms, expansions) is processed entirely on your device and never leaves your browser.

Where is my data processed?

Rubil uses a hybrid approach. Your personal dictionary (names, acronyms, custom terms) is processed entirely on your device and never sent to any servers. Your voice recordings are processed through our trusted partner OpenAI for high-quality transcription and formatting then immediately discarded. We chose this approach to give you the best of both worlds: privacy for your personal information and quality for your formatted output.

What happens if I hit the 1,000 word limit?

On the Free tier you can finish your current recording but you won't be able to start a new one until midnight your local time. The Pro tier removes this limit entirely.

Does Rubil generate text for me?

No. We believe in Creative Sovereignty. Rubil is a ghostwriter not an author. We format your original thoughts but we never invent facts, answer emails for you or generate content you didn't speak.

Can I use it for meeting notes?

Technically yes but Rubil is optimized for active communication (writing emails, messages, tickets) rather than passive recording. It is designed to turn a single speaker's thoughts into written output not to transcribe multi-person meetings like Otter or Fireflies.
